SAN GIMIGNANELLO ALLE SERRE is located between the Val di Chiana and the Ombrone Valley, close to the current expressway that leads from Bettolle to Siena, at the junction for Asciano.
The castle of S. Gimignanello was originally one of the border fiefdoms of the Counts of Scialenga, lords of Asciano and of which there are documented traces as early as 1022.
Bought by the Sienese in 1212, during the incorporation of the Scialengo territory into the Republic of Siena.
San Gimignanello was subsequently used as a frontier fort and in 1272 a trustee was sent there, under the direct orders of the power of Siena.
There is information that the existing church of S. Gimignanello was rebuilt by the noble Sansedoni family from Siena. In fact, the Sansedonis took over many possessions of the Counts of Berardenga and Scialenga, following their submission by Siena.
Currently, while maintaining its castle structure intact, a private property used as a farm has resurfaced.
